Mantua 4-4-0

Heb een nieuw exemplaar 4-4-0 van Mantua gekocht. Nog niet compleet maar daar wordt aan gewerkt. Deze zal tot "General" omgetoverd worden / Bought myself a Manta 4-4-0. Not yet complete but I'm working on that. This one wil be transfered to the famous "General":

Vanmiddag de bak even gemaakt. 100 bij 30cm, 50 hoog / I made my module today, 1 by 3 foot 3 inch, and 1 foot 8 inches high:

De watertank / The watertank

Vandaag de watertank gedeeltelijk gemaakt. De basis is een 2cm lange closetrol beplankt met strookjes hout / Today I made partially the watertank. I took a toiletrol and cut a piece to fit the wooden sticks:

Wissel bijna klaar / Turnout almost finished

Vandaag de stubwissel veranderd. Was voorzien van een pertinax stelbalk, nu is dat een houten geworden. Dit werkt vele malen beter / Today I changed my first-build stubswitch. The tie to move the points is now from wood.

Oude balk. Je ziet de buigende staven die zorgen voor een slechte loop omdat ze star gesoldeerd zijn / old tie. You see that the rail is bending because it is steady soldered:

Werkt perfect, test truck rolt er prima over in alle richtingen omdat nu de staven los in de spijkers liggen / Works perfect, test truck runs smoothly in all directions because now the rail lies loose in the spikes!

Ik ben er tevreden mee / I'm happy with it!

Gisteren een nieuw boek ontvangen van Bernard Kempinski zelf (waar ik het besteld had)/ Yesterday I received a new book from Bernard Kempinski himself (I ordered direct from him):

Hierin is een vol hoofdstuk gewijd aan een ontwerp van City Point, VA in H0 en 0 / It has a full chapter devoted to a plan of City Point, VA in H0 and 0.

De persoonlijke boodschap! / The personal message!! (great!):

Met dit boek hoop ik wat beter tot een ontwerp voor het project te gaan komen / With this book I hope to come to a good design for my project.

En zijn gelaserde draaistellen uit de CW periode van Alkem Scale Models. Hier wil ik mee gaan experimenteren / And a set of CW trucks from Alkem Scale Models to experiment with.

Het is nu wel duidelijk; ik ga een baan bouwen met als thema de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog (1860 - 1865)! Dit thema intrigeert mij enorm omdat deze periode in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis een grote rol gespeeld heeft in de ontwikkeling van de spoorwegen daar. Verder biedt het mij de mogelijkheid nu eens niet een modelbaan te bouwen "uit de doos" maar nu eens veel zelf te moeten bouwen cq. verbouwen. Dat is een uitdaging op zich, maar wel eentje waar ik nu na een flink aantal jaren modelbouw aan toe ben.

Tot nu heb ik een 3-tal 4-4-0's van AHM/Rivarossi en een 20-tal wagons vergaard via vrienden, modelspoormarkten, Marktplaats  en Ebay. Er komen  nog 3 stuks 4-4-0's bij binnenkort (2 Rivarossi's en 1 Mantua) en ook ligt hier nog een 4-6-0 van zowel Frateschi als van Roundhouse. Aardig wat dus als startpunt.

Uit te beelden gaat mijn voorkeur uit naar City Point, Virginia. Hier is een bevoorradingspunt aangelegd van de noordelijken in de periode mid-zomer 1864. Het heeft tot het einde van de oorlog midden 1865 als steunpunt gediend voor de bevoorrading. Een interessant item dus. Als voorbereiding op de boeken die ik inmiddels aangeschaft heb is van Bernard Kempinski het boek "mid-size trackplans for realistic layouts" onderweg. Ik heb dat bij hemzelf besteld (www.alkemscalemodels.com). In dat boek behandeld Bernard City Point als uitgangspunt voor een modelbaan. Hier hoop ik nog wat tips weg te halen en een startpunt te hebben voor mijn eigen plannen.

Verder ben ik een diorama gestart van 100 bij 30 cm om diverse technieken waaronder het zelf leggen van rails en het spijkeren ervan uit te testen.

Om een idee te geven wat ik bedoel onderaan nog wat foto's van zowel voorbeeld als model.

Oke, it is clear now I hope; I'm going to build a American Civil War (ACW) layout! This theme has a great interest with me because in this period the American Railroad bloomed greatly. Also, the RR's played a mayor role in the outcome of the war.
Furthermore it gives me as modeller the possibility not to build "out-of-the-box" but the necessity of building things myself from scratch, or to rebuild existing items. That in itself is a big challenge, one that I need after building 3 exhibition layouts the normal way. This 4th one has to be special to me.

Until now I have aquired 3 AHM/Rivarossi 4-4-0's and a good 20 pieces of rolling stock. They came via friends, Ebay, Dutch Marketplace and markets of model items. I hope to aquire some more pieces of rolling stock in the near future. And also present here are a Fratesch 4-6-0 and a Roundhouse kit of a 4-6-0, so maybe these 2 are also usable.

What has the most interest to me is a place called Cit Point, Virginia. There the North started a big restock point for supplying its armys that where in battle there. The base started mid 1864 and lasted untill the end of the war in 1865. A very interesting item!

As preperation to the design (and as supplement to the books I already have) of the layout I bought the book "mid-size trackplans for realistic layouts" from Bernard Kempinski himself (www.alkemscalemodels.com). He has devoted one whole chapter to City Point in the ACW, so I hope it gives me enough tips and info to start the design of City Point.

At last; I'm already started a diorama of 3 by 1 ft to test the different techniques needed to buid the layout. This is primary devoted to the self building of stub turnouts and the rails itself.
